Wong Chuk Hang Landmark South | The Lurking Void during Art March Hong Kong
Description
To demonstrate the adaptability of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) SHOWCASE, it is presenting the exhibition The Lurking Void during Art March Hong Kong. Through site-specific installations by Hong Kong artist Phoebe Hui, created in response to the unique characteristics of the SHOWCASE, the exhibition invites audiences to traverse the space while reflecting on how artificial intelligence (AI) is being reconfigured and reimagined. Drawing inspiration from the rapid trajectory of technological advancement, the exhibition offers insights into the transforming relationship between AI and humanity. With the growing presence of artificial intelligence, it permeates our daily lives in every aspects. Evolving from simple mechanical operations to complex algorithms—and increasingly expanding into the realm of psychological support—the bond between humans and machines has become deeply interwoven. Much like the paradigm shifts from the agricultural to the industrial revolutions, under the proposition of the contemporary "Post-Human Era", we are about to face another wave in human history.
The Lurking Void invites audiences to step into a heterotopia created by the artist—an interstitial space that straddles reality and fiction. Within this borderland, the artist explores how the relationship between artificial intelligence and humanity is interwoven and permeated, with boundaries gradually diluted until they become transparent. In this process lies a rethinking of human presence, labour, work, identity and value. Here, everything is interconnected, yet there are no absolute definitions or definitive answers. Instead, the exhibition serves as an open invitation for audiences to navigate the lurking void of the post-human landscape, encouraging them to find their own insights within this contemplative space.
Accompanying the exhibition are various fringe activities, including artist sharing, workshops, and guided tours, designed to foster dialogue and offer audiences diverse entry points into the exhibition.
#1. Slow Processing
The exhibition features an extended experience zone, where the screening room of the Arts Information Centre will be reconfigured into a pre-digital workplace titled Slow Processing. Slow Processing serves as a counterpoint to the age of instant, temporarily disconnecting from speed and productivity, offering visitors a chance to experience firsthand the obsolete office machines that were once symbolized "cutting-edge" and "upgrades" in their time, and to rediscover the slower rhythms of a bygone office life.
#2. Public Guided Tours
Public guided tours are available every Saturday. Led by docents, the tours will unpack the exhibition's core themes, allowing the public to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the artworks on display.
#3. Artist Guided Tour and Sharing
Artist Phoebe Hui has specially invited a guest to engage in a live dialogue during a special guided tour. The two speakers will explore the artworks and their underlying concepts from different perspectives, detailing the stories and processes behind the creative journeys.
#4. Mechanics Workshop
Using simple mechanics as a medium, this workshop invites participants to get hands-on and create their own simple gadgets. It offers a relaxed and engaging process to explore the underlying themes of mechanics and artificial intelligence.
